The following is a list of organisations that can be contacted who may be able to assist you when you return home.

Stroke Recovery Association NSW – Provides information, telephone counselling, referrals, education on Stroke prevention for Stroke survivors, their carers and families. Coordinates 41 Stroke Recovery Clubs around NSW and has links to Stroke Associations in other states.


Carer Gateway – Provides practical information, advice, phone counselling, free carer’s coaching and
allows you to connect with other carers in their community forum.


My Aged Care – My Aged Care is the main entry point to the aged care system in Australia. My Aged
Care aims to make it easier for older people, their families, and carers to access information on ageing and aged care, have their needs assessed, and be supported to find and access services.


National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) – National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government initiative to provide financial support to citizens and permanent residents of Australia who have a disability that requires long-term care and assistance, and who cannot afford private disability insurance.


Centrelink – Government Agency that provides financial assistance and pensions for people with disability, carers and people who are ill. You may be entitled to a carers allowance if you are caring for someone with a Stroke.


Assistive Technologies Australia – Formerly known as the Independent Living Centre. This organisation has information on a comprehensive range of products and equipment for people with disabilities. The centre does not sell items, they only display them.


Technical Aid for the Disabled (TAD) – Technical Aids for the Disabled designs aids where commercial aids are not available. TADs’ custom built items are often produced at a fraction of the cost thanks to the efforts of skilled volunteers. They also modify existing equipment to improve its suitability for the individual client. They also provide computers on loan to people with disabilities.


Australian Physiotherapy Association NSW – Provides names of physiotherapists in your local area. (Ask if they make home visits).


Speech Pathologists Association NSW – Will provide the name of a speech pathologist in your local area.


Occupational Therapists Association of Australia – Will provide names of occupational therapists in your local area. (Ask if they provide this service at home).


Driving Assessment – For information regarding driving assessments and re-training programs for those who may need assistance to acquire or re-acquire a driving licence.


Taxi Subsidy Scheme – Provides subsidies for people with disabilities for taxis, buses, trains etc.


RMS Disabled Drivers Parking Permit – Provides parking concessions to people with mobility difficulties.


People with Disability Australia – Free service to help people with a disability who want to make a complaint about their rights being infringed. This service provides information about your rights, refers you to the appropriate complaint service and helps you use the service.


Physical Disability Council of NSW – PDCN assist people with a physical disability to live ordinary lives as contributing members of the community by providing opportunities for individuals to gain the information, knowledge and skills necessary to manage their lives. 


Australian Recreational Therapy Association – Australian Recreational Therapy Association is committed to promoting, fostering and advancing the development of the profession of Recreational Therapy in Australia and internationally. Its mission is to ensure that the practice of Recreational Therapy continues to be viable and relevant, contributing to the wellbeing of clients and the community, while encouraging education, professional and personal development in its members.


Radio for the Print Handicapped – 2RPH is one in a network of Special Purpose, not-for-profit radio stations all around Australia, dedicated to turning print media into sound. 1224 on the AM dial.


Vision Impaired Travel Pass – If you are legally blind you can apply for a Vision Impaired Pass to travel on any government bus, ferry or train.


Meals on Wheels – Provides meals delivered to your home.


Royal Rehab Driver Assessment and Training Service – Promotes independence and safety in driving for people with a range of disabilities or medical concerns. Provides driving assessments and retraining programs and assists people with special needs who may need advice and assistance to regain their license or acquire their license for the first time. Part of the Royal Rehab Centre Sydney, at Ryde.
